The most common way writers make money blogging is by using advertisements on their site. There are many different ways to advertise on your site: banner ads, text links, pay per click, and paid reviews are just a few.

Banner Ads

These are probably the most common way that bloggers earn an income online. You’ve probably already seen them on various blogs and websites. Advertisers will pay bloggers to put up a “banner”, or small image, that links back to the advertisers website. Banners vary in size, ranging from small “buttons” that are 100×100 pixels. (If you are new to blogging, you will often see pictures measured in ‘pixel’s instead of inches or centimeters. Pixels are basically the small dots of color that make up your computer screen.) Advertisers will typically pay different amounts depending on the size of the ad, where the ad is placed on your blog, and how much traffic your blog gets.

Avoid using anything animated or overly flashy. Yes, you’ll want to make the ad stand out so that readers will notice it and click on it, but at the same time, something too obnoxious may drive readers away.

Pay Per Click / Pay Per Action

These ads are very similar to banner ads, as they also typically use images that link back to their site. However, the difference is how you get paid. With Pay Per Click, or PPC, ads, you get paid every time a reader clicks on your link.

Pay Per Action ads are a little bit more complicated. With these types of ads, you will get paid based on a specific action that one of your readers takes on the advertiser’s website. So, for example, if the ‘action’ is having a user sign up for the advertisers website, then you will get paid if a reader clicks on your link and then registers for the advertiser’s website.

To make more money with this type of ad, you’ll want to make sure the readers not only see it, but are enticed to click it. You’ll probably make more money if you link to an advertiser that relates to your blog’s niche and is something you feel your readers will be interested in. You’ll also want to take certain steps to help readers notice it. Put it somewhere prominent on your blog homepage, for example at the top. Write a post explaining to your readers why the company is worth their time and suggest they click your ad to check it out.

Paid Reviews

These ‘ads’ are blog posts that you write that review a product or website. Often the advertiser will ask that you review their website and link back to it. Some advertisers will pay you, some will provide you with products that they want you to review. When writing paid reviews, it’s very important that you give your honest opinion and also that you disclose, either within the post or somewhere on your site, that you have received compensation.

Also, you want to make sure you continue to produce original and unique content for your blog readers. They don’t just want to see ads all the time. Write posts related to your blog topic and write reviews now and then.

These are only a few ways you can earn money blogging, although they are among the most common. Once you start using ads on your site, be careful and don’t let the ads take over your site. Remember that you still need to update your blog constantly with unique and relevant articles. Whenever you put a link on your website, you should consider how useful it is to your readers. Only link to sites that would make sense to your readers, that are related to your blogs niche or that you think your readers would find interesting or helpful.
